A Conversation with Tipper X

Insights from a Hedge Fund Informer

From 2008 - 2012, a little-known New York City-based analyst - Tom Hardin - assisted FBI agents in understanding how insider trading occurred in the hedge fund industry. Known by his undercover moniker "Tipper X", Tom wore a covert body wire to help the FBI bring down some of its biggest targets in the industry and become the secret witness at the center of the biggest insider-trading case in a generation. Afterwards, through rigorous self-examination, Tom took responsibility for his actions as a young professional, used the experience to transform his life, and is now on an on-going journey into human behaviour and why we sometimes make the wrong decisions.

Thomas Deinet was appointed Executive Director of the SBAI in 2008, having previously joined the working group to project manage the development of practice standards proposed by 14 leading international alternative investment managers that led to the establishment of the SBAI.

From 2008-2012, a little-known New York City-based analyst, Tom Hardin, assisted FBI agents in understanding how insider trading occurred in the hedge fund industry. As the youngest professional later implicated in the sting, and known by his undercover moniker “Tipper X”, Tom was tasked with wearing a covert body wire to help the FBI bring down some of its biggest targets in the industry, leading to the largest Wall Street house cleaning campaign of a generation. Tom was later invited by FBI-NYC to speak to their rookie agents in 2016 and is now a global keynote speaker, corporate trainer and board advisor on behavioral ethics, compliance and organizational conduct and culture risk. Through rigorous self-examination, Tom took responsibility for his actions as a young professional, used the experience to transform his life, and is now on an on-going journey into human behavior and why we sometimes make the wrong decisions.

Tom is a graduate of The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. The narrative of his life is set to be the focus of his memoir, which will be published in 2024.

Thomas Deinet was appointed Executive Director of the SBAI (previously known as the HFSB) in 2008. In 2007, Thomas joined the working group to project manage the development of practice standards proposed by 14 leading international alternative investment managers that led to the establishment of the SBAI.

Prior to joining the SBAI, he was a senior manager at Oliver Wyman, where he extensively worked with major financial institutions in Europe covering asset management as well as corporate and investment banking. Thomas also worked as an analyst in energy trading for a major commodity trading firm.

Thomas is a graduate of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, with a major in industrial engineering and holds an MSc from Purdue University, USA. Thomas is a CFA charterholder.
